The Preußensteig is another certified hiking trail in the Kusel community with a length of 29 km. It is a circular hiking trail, so you can get on anywhere.
Signposted entrances are at the Holzbach in Kusel-Diedelkopf (in front of the road maintenance depot), at Lichtenberg Castle and on the Herzerberg.
If you follow the path to the Holzbachtal west of Kusel, you are entering terrain steeped in history: massive stone blocks that are almost 200 years old can be found at the edge of the path.
The engraved initials "KB" and "KP" indicate the border there between the former royal domains of Bavaria and Prussia.
After Napoleon's defeat in 1814, the German map was redrawn at the Congress of Vienna.
The Rhineland was assigned to Prussia, the Palatinate on the left bank of the Rhine with around 430,000 inhabitants fell to Bavaria in 1816.
The route through a gently rolling landscape, with a variety of different types of vegetation, next to hay meadows, orchards and through lush mixed forests.
The highest point of the way is the dragon departure ramp on the 585m high Herzerberg. Here you will be rewarded for the effort of the ascent with a gigantic view of the Musikantenland, up to the Sickinger Höhe and the neighboring Saarland.
Another highlight on the way is the 380m high Lichtenberg Castle, with a length of 425m it is the largest castle ruin in Germany. In addition to the romantic flair, the 800-year-old ruin offers the Musikanten Land Museum with the history of the hiking musicians and the geoscope it offers insights into the prehistoric times of the Palatinate Uplands 290 million years ago.
The path is not accessible all year round.
