Kirschenland-Hiking Trail
Der Kirschenland-Hiking trail leads on a circular route of around 20 km through the districts of the three Kohlbachtal communities Altenkirchen, Dittweiler and Frohnhofen. The landscape here is characterized by extensive orchards. In old records, the Kohlbachtal is also referred to as the "Westrich's orchard". The sweet cherry cultivation, which has been practiced to a greater extent since around 1800, gave the hiking trail its name. Although fruit cultivation has largely declined in recent years, over 30,000 fruit trees are still in bloom in the Kohlbachtal in May, including 15,000 cherry trees alone. The hiking trail leads to the beautiful local recreation facilities Entenweiher in Frohnhofen, Höbelgraben in Altenkirchen, Römerweiher and Elschbrunnen in Dittweiler. The Protestant church in Altenkirchen with the distinctive curved tower dome is a special building-historical testimony. Parts of the tower date from the Romanesque period. The nave was built in 1756. In the Altenkirchen Heimatmuseum (local history museum) you can see a rich collection from earlier everyday life and extensive documentation on emigration to America. In the Ahlenwald near Altenkirchen, tunnel mouth holes testify to the earlier coal mining. On the 375 m high local mountain of Dittweiler and Altenkirchen there is a replica of a medieval waiting tower. From here you have a beautiful view of the Westrich mountains.
Diamantschleifer-Trail
Since 1888, Brücken had been the center of the West Palatinate diamond industry. In the 1930s, over 2500 people were employed in the diamond cutting shops in the West Palatinate. The Diamantschleifer-Weg leads as a circular route over a distance of 18 km through the Ohmbachtal communities of Brücken and Ohmbach. Here you can follow the trail of the stones. The largest altar mosaic in the Palatinate is located in the Catholic parish church of Brücken (built 1953-55). It is composed of over 30,000 Italian marble stones. Glass flow pieces. The mine tunnel of the Brücken hard coal mine is a reminder of the hard coal mining that was carried out from 1775 to 1939. Other stone witnesses are old boundary stones from 1786 and the concrete remains of old Westwall bunkers. The stone slab quarry in Ohmbach shows the regional importance of sandstone slab mining. Here, in the 19th century, sandstone slabs for floor coverings were mined in an underground tunnel. The tunnel mouth hole can still be seen today. The existence of various lime tunnels and lime kilns is also pointed out. The Diamond Hyrax Museum in Brücken, inaugurated in 1999, is particularly interesting. Here you can watch cutters working on diamonds on Sundays. There is also a “treasure chest” in which children can go in search of precious stones.
Ritter-Gerin-Trail
The 27 km long Ritter-Gerin-Weg in the area of the communities Schönenberg-Kübelberg and Gries is named after a Kübelberg knight family. Already in the early Middle Ages there was a tower hill castle in Kübelberg, which was first mentioned in a document in 1297. Starting from this castle, the market town of Kübelberg developed into a place of justice that comprised 12 villages. Witnesses of the judiciary are the replica of a medieval gallows near the Sander Galgenhügel, the blood execution site Rabentisch on a 15 m high hill near Schönenberg and the pillory in Kübelberg. Furthermore, the path leads to the Ohmbachsee, with 15 hectares the largest water area in the West Palatinate. The lake area is designed as a wonderful park landscape. In addition to a camping park with a restaurant and hotel, there are three other sea kiosks. There is also the possibility of going out to sea with pedal boats. The children can let off steam in the water playground. The “Romantic Lake Festival” takes place on the 3rd weekend in July and attracts thousands of visitors. In the course of the Ritter-Gerin-Weg there is also a reminder of the former Glan Valley Railway, on which part of the Glan-Blies Cycle Path runs today. In Gries, the path leads past the extensive Glanschleife to the Kühnerbachtal, where a small population of orchids has survived. At some points on the hiking trail there is a view of the Catholic parish church of St. Valentin in Kübelberg. The construction of the tower goes back to the 12th century. The old nave was built in the 18th century.
