From Freisen via Thallichtenberg to Kusel. Connect music and paths. So the name of the famous singer Fritz Wunderlich, who remained connected to his home country, was chosen for the cycling and hiking trail connecting the city of Kusel in Rhineland Palatinate and the municipality of Freisen in Saarland. Kammersänger Fritz Wunderlich was born on September 26th, 1930 in the Palatinate town of Kusel. He studied singing and French horn at the Freiburg University of Music. Fritz Wunderlich's world career lasted almost 7 years. During this time he has made a name for himself on many stages in Europe and overseas. He was called the best Mozart tenor of our day. 9 days before his thirty-sixth birthday on September 17, 1966, a tragic accident ended Fritz Wunderlich's life and world career.
The Fritz Wunderlich bike and hiking trail begins in Freisen above the town hall at the former Füsselberg train station, leads over the so-called iron bridge around the Weiselberg over the large valley bridge near Oberkirchen through the 216 m long illuminated tunnel to Schwarzerden. At the entrance to Schwarzerden, we leave the route and hike along the path that runs parallel to the former railway line to the former Schwarzerden train station, before continuing along the IWS site, where the path leads us back onto the railway line. In Schwarzerden we have the opportunity to take a short detour to the Mithras Temple, about 300 m away.
From the state border with Rhineland Palatinate behind the IWS, the route continues via Pfeffelbach to Thallichtenberg. There you can leave Trasse at the former train station to stop off at the Hotel Burgblick 900 m away or spend the night. A detour to Lichtenberg Castle, Germany's largest castle ruin with its two museums, is always worthwhile. The hiking trail has a total length of 21 km and is mostly flat, so that it can be used particularly well for families with children, elderly citizens and the disabled.
