Preussen Steig
The Preußensteig is another predicate hiking trail in the Kusel municipality with a length of 29 km. It is a circular hiking trail, so you can start anywhere.
Signed entrances are at the Holzbach in Kusel-Diedelkopf (in front of the road maintenance department), at the Lichtenberg Castle and on the Herzerberg.
If you follow the path west of Kusel into the Holzbachtal, you are walking on historic terrain: massive stone blocks that are almost 200 years old can be found along the way. The engraved initials "KB" and "KP" indicate the course of the border between the former royal territories of Bavaria and Prussia.
After Napoleon's defeat in 1814, the German map was redrawn at the Vienna Congress. The Rhineland was awarded to Prussia, the Palatinate on the left bank of the Rhine with around 430,000 inhabitants fell to Bavaria in 1816.
The route through a gently undulating landscape, with a variety of different types of vegetation, next to mowing meadows, orchards and through lush mixed forests.
The highest point on the way is the kite departure ramp on the 585m high Herzerberg. Here you will be rewarded with a gigantic view of the Musikantenland, up to the Sickinger Höhe and into the neighboring Saarland for the effort of the ascent.
Another highlight on the way is the 380m high castle Lichtenberg, with a length of 425m it is the largest castle ruin in Germany. In addition to the romantic flair, the 800-year-old ruin offers the Musikanten Land Museum with the history of hiking musicians and the geoscope offers insights into the prehistoric times of the Palatinate highlands 290 million years ago.
The path is not accessible all year round.
